The Paul E. Roman Award

The 2005 Lodi Tournament served as the venue for the launch of the Paul E. Roman Award given to the campers who most exemplify what we are trying to accomplish with our tournaments.  For those of you who didn't get a chance to meet Paul who passed away in 2002, get yourself a copy of his wife Jackie's book and you'll see why he was chosen to represent this award.  Read about Paul's passing on the Memorial Page Just as Dodgertown West has their David Blakemore award, we will recognize some campers each year for their contribution to the events.

Each year, previous winners will be asked to vote on new award recipients.  Winners will be announced at the Lodi tournament each year and they will be awarded a certificate as well as have their names etched on a perpetual plaque.

JOHN HAINES NAMED 2013 PAUL E. ROMAN AWARD WINNER

The 2013 Lodi Tournament served as the venue for the presentation of this year's Paul E. Roman award winner.  The award is given to the campers who most exemplify what we are trying to accomplish with these tournaments and league events.  Just as Dodgertown West has their David Blakemore award, we will recognize some campers each year for their contribution to the events.

This year's sole winner was John Haines.  John has been a participant in the WCFBA since the late 90's.  He frequently coaches in both league and tournament events and has been a WCFBA board member for the last few years.  John has a very colorful sense of humor and players often ask to be placed on his team for tournament events.  He makes sure his team members get their fair share of playing time and that they have a good time.  John hosts an annual Halloween party that features a broken bat burning ceremony.  He invites all members of the WCFBA each year because those people are his family.  He has frequently stated that while the baseball games are fun, being with his friends is what this is truly all about.

For those of you who didn't get a chance to meet Paul who passed away in 2002, get yourself a copy of his wife Jackie's book and you'll see why he was chosen to represent this award.  A web page has been created to honor Paul and all the award winners.  Each year, previous winners will be asked to select new award recipients.  Winners will be announced at the Lodi tournament each year and they will be awarded a certificate as well as have their names etched on a perpetual plaque.

SCOTT LUEDERS NAMED 2012 PAUL E. ROMAN AWARD WINNER

The 2012 Lodi Tournament served as the venue for the presentation of this year's Paul E. Roman award winner.  The award is given to the campers who most exemplify what we are trying to accomplish with these tournaments and league events.  Just as Dodgertown West has their David Blakemore award, we will recognize some campers each year for their contribution to the events.

This year's sole winner was Scott Lueders.  Scott was a near unanimous selection.  Throughout the 90's and into the mid-2000's, Scott would volunteer to coach a team at tournaments. He was meticulously organized and made sure his players had fun. You knew if you played on Scott's team, you would be treated fairly.  Scott 'gets' what this is all about. Many of us have made fun of his look of disbelief on strike calls. He laughs at the imitations just as loud as the rest of us and realizes it is all in fun.  Scott is enthusiastic about leading the fantasy camper band, The Melodians, and providing entertainment for the group at tournaments and parties. These are his friends and he wants to do a good job.

JACKIE ROMAN'S BOOK - "THE LEGACY OF LOVE AND LAUGHTER"

Jackie and Ryan Roman attended the Lodi tournament and after the first Roman Awards were announced, Jackie let everyone know that her new book is ready.  After Paul's death, Jackie decided a good way for her to get through the healing process was to put her thoughts down in words.  What she came up with was book about Paul and her father, Jack, called "The Legacy of Love and Laughter".

Jackie has provided the following details about the book and how to get yourself a copy:

Title The Legacy of Love and Laughter

Short Description:     The book is about Paul and my dad Jack.  My dad was such a character that everyone said I had to write this book because no one would believe the things he did in life while living to 79.  It's about Paul and his life, his friends, tributes from all of his family, friends and baseball compadres. It's the other side of a man that most people don't know and it is a treasure of stories that happened in our 30 years of marriage. You will laugh hysterically and it will bring a tear to your eye as well. Ryan has also written a chapter that you will really enjoy.  He has his dad's sense of humor.
